Prostate Cancer Symptoms

Prostate Cancer symptoms often do not manifest themselves during the very beginning stages of this disease.  Later this oncologic condition can present itself with urinary or sexual dysfunction as the affected prostate starts to interfere with the anatomic structures around it.  Due to the absence or confusion of symptoms with other non-life threatening illnesses, such as Enlarged prostate, these signs can go unattended longer than they should.  Don’t wait to discuss the following issues with a qualified urologist:

  • Painful urination
  • Incomplete bladder emptying
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Weak urinary stream
  • Urgency and frequency of urination
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Difficulty of urination initiation
  • Sexual Dysfunction

Statistics

The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2018, about 164,690 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and about 29,430 men will die of prostate cancer.

About 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Prostate cancer develops mainly in older men and in African-American men.

About 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40.

Prostate cancer can be a serious disease, but most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it. In fact, more than 2.9 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.

What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate is a male sex gland that is located near the bladder and rectum and plays a role in semen production.  Prostate Cancer develops as an abnormality of the prostate tissue. Family history, age, race, diet, as well as other genetic conditions are causes for this type of oncology. American Cancer Society states that this is the second most common cancer in the USA.

How To Diagnose?

Accord Physicians prides itself on being the leader in the fight against Prostate Cancer.  Early diagnosis often  leads to successful treatment of this disease.  PSA (prostate specific androgen)  and DRE (digital rectal exams) are the gold standards for determining prostate oncology performed right on our premises by qualified personnel. A specialized Accord Physicians team of urologists, oncologists, radiologists and pathologists cooperate in a technologically advanced environment to decipher the results of tests for precise diagnosis and effective treatment.

In determining the diagnosis

In determining the diagnosis, experienced doctors at Accord Physicians treat every patient as an individual.  Prostate specialists including urologists, pathologists, radiologists and laboratory technicians as well as a robust clinical staff collaborate together to form a precise diagnosis.

Advanced equipment such as CT Scan, Sonography as well as a specialized laboratory is available right on premises enabling healthcare providers to make exact diagnosis in the shortest amount of time.  PSA (prostate-specific antigen) study and biopsy may be required to rule out prostate cancer.  Test outcomes and results are obtained immediately whenever possible. Availability of in-house necessary diagnostic tools saves our patients’ valuable time.

Treatment Options

When choosing a method of treatment, we take into account the stage of the cancer, the patient's age, risk of complications, as well as the wishes of the patient. There are a number of proven treatment options available, including radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and surgical treatment. To date, the most effective method of combating prostate cancer is radiation therapy. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is a unique type of radiation therapy offered at Accord Physicians which involves the use of computed tomography (CT) to carefully pinpoint and map the exact 3-Dimensional shape of the tumor. The software carefully calculates the dose intensity pattern that will best conform to the tumor shape. IMRT allows for more effective radiation to the prostate, while minimizing exposure to adjacent normal tissues. With a radiation oncologist with over 30 years of experience and the most modern treatment and diagnostic tools, Accord Physicians is a leader in the fight against prostate cancer.

If you suspect that you may have a prostate cancer, it is imperative that you schedule a consultation with a prostate specialist to avoid serious consequences.
